Nehemiah 9:17 – Big Faith From Little Blessings

Nehemiah 9:17 They refused to obey and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them.

The Israelites time and time again were saved by God through miracles as they were in and leaving Egypt. But they continually rebelled from God. Reading these accounts in Scripture can easily make us feel competent and prideful.

Our minds are filled with the notion that if we had seen the miracles the Israelites saw, we would never have forgotten them. Generally, we could rightly assume that none of us reading this has ever seen a sea part, a river turn to blood or manna from heaven. But, we think that if we did, we would never act faithlessly as the Israelites did toward God.

What if we are looking at this scripture and others similar in the wrong way? We can claim we have never seen God do a “big” miracle, when God is blessing us with “little” miracles every day. The job you have, the healthy family, your relationships, even your salvation are all gifts, all blessings. We are told that every good gift comes from God (James 1:17). If our good gifts come from God, then we are right to assume that they aren’t our doing and come from the Lord. This can and should translate into a humbling experience that allows us to trust God more while striving not to be like the Israelites who seemed to continually forget God’s miraculous works in their lives.

How does God work everyday in your life?

Did you know there were 22 precious praying souls who supported the Sunday Evening Prayer Gathering last weekend?  This is a record number for us — but more than that it indicates YOU believe how essential PRAYER is in growing the Kingdom of God…..Restoring fallen members……building a Hedge of Thorns around the Family of God and church facilities…….damages big-time the powers of darkness.  It would be a good time NOW to circle March 6 as our next prayer gathering.  Love to see 22 turn into 44?…………….Because of scheduling conflicts there will be NO FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT in February……………Remember Joy Weir in prayer – she re-fractured her hip recently and the Dr. said “take it easy…..”  Our pray will be equally divided between healing…..and taking it easy…….We are sad Joy, to hear this news but we know Jesus is our Healer………….Monday evening of this week the Doug was invited to lead the worship of the monthly meeting of CMCE – which is a group of Christians from the Christian church whose goal is to fellowship – and take up an offering to assist either struggling churches – or new church plants.  They met at Blue Ridge this month……he said there were around 80 in attendance…Next month it will be in Higbee….if any of you are interested in this ministry – please see Doug for further details…………For years we have  heard – “you do not mix politics and religion”.  What if the upcoming sermon is “What is the Christian’s responsibility to the Government?”   Rom 13…..hope all plan to study this timely topic with us – at one of our Celebration Services…………..Discovery will be the setting for a wedding tomorrow evening (Friday)……

This news is so noteworthy – it deserves its only little space….Last week – Marcy Henderson celebrated 4 years of being free of Crack Cocaine.   Next time you see Marcy – let her know you stand with her victory – and give a word or 2 of encouragement.

2 Chron 7:14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

This Scripture encourages believers to do 4 things before their voice their prayers…..1)  Humble themselves  2)  Pray    3) Seek His Face   4)  Turn from their wicked ways….As we follow the Biblical Pattern – please voice the following prayer concerns to God!!!

 ·      Church experience great growth (numerically and Spiritually) north of I-70

·      Hunger and Thirst in the heart of every believer to grow in Christ’s likeness

·      To be used of God daily:  as encourager…prayer partner…soul saver

·      Karen’s brother who is rehabbing in Paris, MO

·      Jackie’s sister – health issues in rehab in Shelbina, MO

·      Leslie Marshall – wisdom to move forward regarding health issues

·      Shelby Baker hurt his knee Monday – today he had some tests and he wants Discovery to pray that he can avoid surgery to correct his problem. Because his injury did not occur at work, the company does not have to hold his job for him.

Should a Christian get involved in politics/government?  A wise man wrote a long time ago these pertinent words all that is needed for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing!!!!   Our text this weekend is Rom 13.  Immediately in the text, Paul commands that Christians be submissive to the authorities….can we (Christian’s) be submissive to a corrupt evil government?  When Christ said – render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God what is God’s do you think He expected us to be submissive to both KINGDOMS – the kingdom of this world and the kingdom of God?

What is the purpose of Government?  Is God the author of all Government?  Is it true if I refuse to obey the laws of the land – I’m refusing to obey God….(how serious is that)?  Why did God put people in power within the government?  Why do you think there is such a disdain for policeman?

As Christians, are we supposed to pray for our governmental leaders…..If Paul was living today do you think he would be an snotty to Nero – as Christians are to Obama on social media?  We must respect the office – but we do not have to respect the office holder…..do you find that a tight rope to walk?

The Celebration service this weekend will be our 3rd less in the TABOO series – what is the Christian’s relationship to Government/Politics!
