Have You Put Your God In A Box?

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. (Luke 2:11-12)

We love gifts during Christmas. We love seeing either the UPS truck or FED-EX pull up in front of the house, and we eagerly rush answer the door.  The sad part is the package that has just arrived – cannot be opened till Christmas – therefore we wonder what all our new gift is capable of doing.  As the family gathers to open the presents – the wrapping paper is ripped off – the box quickly opened and to our surprise – the gift has multiple uses – most of which we were originally unaware. Sometimes, things turn out to be even better than we had anticipated.

The same is definitely true with God, he is infinitely better than we anticipate. But, we still try to keep God in a “God Box” and think of Him in terms of the nifty features he comes with. In reality he wants us to let him come bursting out of the box and show us how much more he is. God did this with the shepherds. He told them they would find a baby, who would save the world, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a feeding trough. That is thinking outside the box! More than likely, the Shepherds had their own “God Box”, likely with the savior being a military dictator. But, God burst that paradigm and displayed his abundant mercy and compassion. When He got out of “the box”, he showed them that He is a God who reaches out to those that no one else wants to reach or be around. Shepherds weren’t considered the most moral. In fact, they didn’t often go to church because sheep needed to be constantly cared for, and they couldn’t even testify in court. Yet, they were the first to hear the good news of the Savior’s birth. This was no accident!

As you read your Bible, don’t let your preconceived notions of who God is — interpret what you read. Instead, let scripture and the Holy Spirit guide you in the characteristics of God. Let God break out of his box in your life today and show you who He really is. Remember, His thoughts and ways are not ours (Isaiah 55:8).

Think today of the “box” you may have put God in….and then, as He is freed from this box – your opportunity to serve your fellow and fallen man expands beyond your understanding.

There were 14 people who participated at the monthly prayer gathering last Sunday evening —- we praise God for this effort  —  Discovery is enjoying favor with God and the people, and I for one believe this period of time we are enjoying is a direct reflection of the prayers that have gone up in 2016.   Thank you prayer warriors………..

……Did you know there is always 5 members of Discovery that meet at Discovery Center each Tuesday at 1:00 – to intercede for the body – as well as the church at large……..Obviously everyone is welcome to participate at the monthly prayer gathering or the weekly gathering at the church on Tuesday………….There is just two more weekends for us to bless God with an “end of the year gift.”  It might sound dorky but please consider this in the joy/hope/and love of my heart…..this is the season of giving – thus we give gifts to family members – work associates – bosses – neighbors –and the list continues — have you thought of giving a gift to The Church and/or JESUS.  As you analyze how the church  has blessed you – encouraged you – wept with you – challenged you — it would be fitting to bless her in a special way….please prayerfully consider this as 2016 comes to an end….Annie and I plan to do so and I trust you will follow our example………………When I hear a group say – “so the study has ended for the year”….we can still meet for fellowship, joy, laughter, and encouragement….that is what is happening with the Wednesday morning men’s group  which meets at Lucy’s Café.  Hope all other groups are experiencing this interaction – and spiritual fulfillment. ……………..Thanks to everyone who during ADVENT – either read the Scripture or lit the Advent Candle….so much appreciated

This is your invitation to be with us at either the Saturday or Sunday Celebration service this weekend……the children wrote their own pageant.  The Pageant will begin both services for the weekend – so please be on time…..Jackie and team have done a surpassing great job – this week she prepared the props – and tomorrow – Kevin and Solomon will come in and complete this task.

As I type these lines, my heart rushes over the little children who have been studying their lines – all of which culminate of the greatest truth ever told – God became a BABY – He grew up among us – and died for our sins that we could live with Him forevermore…..Come and be blessed.

All 7 D-Groups will be taking a year-end break…..the final group of 2016 will be this Saturday evening at 4:00 PM at the church……the next Group will kick off the week of January 9th……

There are several who have yet to receive all the blessing the groups have to offer – so I would hope that during this “down-time” you will give strong consideration as to how you could benefit the group by your life-story — and how you could be benefited by the group as you hear the life story of others.

We have groups which are men only….groups which are women only – and groups for both men and women…..

Luke 2:1-7  At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 2 (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. 4 And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. 5 He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child.

And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7 She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.
