Just Drop the Blanket: The Moment You Never Noticed in A Charlie Brown Christmas
Three weeks ago – A Charlie Brown Christmas was shown on ABC. This was the 50th time for it to be shown as we kick off the Christmas Season. To show anything 50 years in a row becomes quite meaningful. It was not until I watched the complete Christmas show of Charlie Brown that I became a fan.
If you have been around Discovery for very long- you will remember that we show Linus responding to Charlie’s question – does anybody know what Christmas is all about….where Linus takes the stage and quotes from Luke 2….It was not until last night I learned something — right in the middle of his quoting scripture he drops his security blanket.
Charlie Brown is best known for his uniquely striped shirt, and Linus is most associated with his ever-present security blanket. Throughout the story of Peanuts, Lucy, Snoopy, Sally and other all work to no avail to separate Linus from his blanket. Even though his security blanket remains a major source of ridicule for the otherwise mature and thoughtful Linus, he simply refuses to give it up.
Until this moment. When he simply drops it. In that climactic scene when Linus shares “What Christmas is all about’ he drops his security blanket, and I am now convinced that this is intentional. Most telling is the specific moment he drops it: when he utters the words FEAR NOT…
Looking at it now, it is pretty clear what Charles Schultz was saying, and it’s so simple it’s brilliant.
· The birth of Jesus separates us from our fears.
· The birth of Jesus frees us from the habits we are unable (or unwilling) to break ourselves.
· The birth of Jesus allows us to simply drop the false security we have been grasping so tightly, and learn to trust and cling to Him instead.
Doug and Jackie – Max and Annie hope that everyone at Discovery will have a truly wonderful Christmas. It is easy to look back over the past 12 months and reflect on what God has done not only in our personal lives, but in the lives of our church family. Jesus is truly the source of every spiritual blessing. We thank God for YOU, and trust that you are growing in word and deed becoming more and more like the ONE whose live we celebrate at this season – even JESUS CHRIST. Our families were so blessed by a generous Christmas Bonus. Thank You!!! Our wish is that you have a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year.
With school dismissing tomorrow till after the New Years – many will be traveling. It is our prayer that travel mercy and safety will be yours as you share Christmas with family and friends throughout…………….Our Core Team had their Christmas Party last Tuesday night at the Olive Garden. What a wonderful night of laughter – fun – stories – and sharing lives together – to say nothing about a scrumptious meal…………..The Ladies Ministry had their annual Ornament Exchange last Friday at the church, with 25 ladies participating……………Starting next week, all D-Groups will take a 3 week break. The groups will meet again, the week of January 10th………………
The Yoder family had their Christmas last Saturday and brought the visiting families to church on Sunday……Great Idea….it would have been so easy for the family to skip church—–saying family is important…..I’m impress April and Solomon – that you sent the message – yes, family is important but JESUS is far more important. Bless you my child!!!! Great Example…………….At both our Weekend Celebration Services – the Children will bless us with their little Christmas Program. It will be on video – since half the children attend Saturday evening and half on Sunday morning. Looking forward to this……………Patrick Fleenor and wife are traveling to Columbia – as he was had completed his time the Marines earlier this week. Hard to believe that Patrick had served 4 years with them………..Let’s also remember Kiersten Yoder – who is also in San Diego with the Navy. Some will not be able to be with family over Christmas – may they be blessed indeed.
For the past four years, I have had the privilege of playing Santa Clause at the annual Dream Factory’s Christmas Party. The party was held last Sunday night at Stoney Creek Inn. In a 4-hour period of time 180 individuals enter the Tiger’s Den, and all the children receive a present from Santa.
95% of the children sit on Santa’s lap telling him what they want for Christmas. Political Correctness does not enter the Tiger’s Den….I have never been told to stop using Charlie Brown’s line – WHAT’S CHRISTMAS ALL ABOUT….this year two teen girls told me what they wanted for Christmas — one said – Peace on Earth…..the other said – Peace and Joy….You will always have Mr. Sportsman, come through who said he wanted the Cardinals to get a great free agent to replace Heyward…..
To hold those children – (many who have a terminal illness – others with disabilities in various degrees – and to speak about the real reason for Christmas – the birth of Jesus – and interact with families throughout the evening is an opportunity I look forward to each December).
· Joy Weir- fell last Sunday and broke her hip. It was surgically repaired Monday. Joy is in much pain. Also pray for wisdom as the family decides where she will do rehab. Scott is her with her and that is a great benefit. It was good to see him Tuesday in the hospital and catch up with him.
· Leslie Marshall has been in terrible pain for 3 weeks. She had a Dr. appointment this week but do not know the results.
· Robert Keeton has been “under the weather” for about a week. He has all the flu symptoms but no fever
· As God brings opportunities to witness for Him – may we verbally share Christ – Jesus said “You shall be My witnesses”….He also said – “Go into all the world…”
– Karen’s brother Jim will be moving from Rusk to University Monday for surgical procedures. Karen also requests prayer in regard to Jim’s care once he is released.
· 2 Chron 7:14 Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.

There are 14 days remaining in 2015. May everyone of us at Discovery stop and reflect on the Goodness of God. May His blessing with a new friendship – good health – opportunity to serve – etc. It is very common to give gifts at Christmas – have you ever thought about giving JESUS a gift on His birthday?
As we reflect on what we have done this year – may each take inventory and remember Jesus’ words – give to Caesar what is his –and God’s what is His.
To meet our financial obligations Discovery needs $2,000.00 per week….Please don’t give because you feel obligated or guilty – but give because you feel blessed for the work God has done in the life of you or your family.
Luke 2:25-35 At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him 26 and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 That day the Spirit led him to the Temple. So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, 28 Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying, 29 “Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised. 30 I have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared for all people.
32 He is a light to reveal God to the nations and he is the glory of your people Israel!”
33 Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, but he will be a joy to many others. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. 35 As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.”
