1. I overslept.
The good news is this is one of the easiest excuses to nip in the bud. How? Set your current alarm louder or get a new alarm if need be. Have a friend give you a wakeup call, have your roommate bang on your door, or make plans to get breakfast with a friend before church. Try to go to bed earlier on Saturdays. There are so many options that this excuse doesn’t hold up anymore.
2. The Chief’s game is on early.
But when it comes down to it, it’s just a game. It’s also a game that very few of us even know someone who’s actually playing in it. Yes, you might be the world’s biggest CHIEF’S fan, but you should be an even bigger follower of God.
3. My kid’s traveling sports team only plays on Sundays.
This is a tricky one because you want to give your kids the best opportunities in life. But when it comes down to it, letting your family miss church repeatedly to play sports may be setting the example that God takes second place.
4. I’ll just listen/watch it on the church’s website
But it’s time to set the record straight: No matter how thankful I am to have world-renowned teaching at my fingertips, podcasts aren’t a replacement for church. There’s so much power in being in community, having that support system of believers, and always being surrounded by a group of people who love you and can hold you accountable. .. But let’s all make it a priority to find community within a church.
5. I’m doing fine. I don’t need church.
“Hey—church is like a hospital and if I’m doing fine I don’t need to go, right?” Wrong! (Plus, if that’s your thought process, you’re not nearly as healthy as you think!)
Spiritual health is very similar to physical health. Do you just neglect all physical health until you are so unhealthy that you end up in the emergency room? No! We make decisions every day for our health, such as the foods we eat and drink, and we get regular checkups. Our spiritual life is the same way! We pray and read our Bibles, and go to church for weekly “checkups.” We don’t want to wait until our spiritual life is in such shambles that we treat church like an emergency room.

The Blessing Box continues to be a blessing on multiple angles.
Members of Discovery who are continually bringing non-perishable items are receiving a blessing from God who said “it is better to give than to receive.”
We are also seeing something we really didn’t expect – a couple times recently – a strange car pulled up – a lady got out and filled the top shelf with toiletries. This has occurred on multiple occasions —
We still haven’t seen anyone who has used the Blessing Box worship with us – but that was not the purpose — we wanted to bless our neighbors with a gift of food letting them know we care – and are doing what the Bible teaches. Scripture teaches we have 3 basic needs: Food – Clothing – Shelter – and the little Blessing Box is being used by God in this way.
Please – those of you who can – bring a small sack with non-perishable food items this weekend…Bro Doug has been so kind to keep the box filled with your items.
Thursday morning Annie and I began to pray IRMA would make a northerly turn – missing the Northwest Haiti Mission – and the Mission of Hope – where (Heather and Janeil minister)….
Obviously from all accounts this storm is a Monster — Floridians are in her path. As God’s family – please pray a) His will be done, b) many who are indifferent toward God will get serious, c) damage will be minimal especially loss of life…..
· With summer the same as over – our prayer is that SEVERAL of our family who are not involved in a D-Group will strongly consider the physical/spiritual benefits of joining a group this fall. Please Pray to that end — and invite others to your group
· Sister Peg Schroder lost her brother in Knoxville, Tenn. She is there and will return to Columbia, Sept. 13
· Our series Preaching Christ from the Book of Psalms will resonate – blessing – encourage and deepen everyone’s love for Psalms, but greater yet – bring everyone closer to the heart of JESUS!!!
· Our precious sister Dele from Nigeria – is wrestling with some very important decisions — please left her up – that God will give her wisdom to make the decisions and strength to live with the decisions made
· Courtney Baker has asked for prayer for her friend Jordan. Jordan asked Courtney to send out this request this morning (Thursday) – so let’s pray for her….She thinks she has LUPUS and will see the Dr. for more tests tomorrow (Friday)….She is married and they are putting off starting a family because of this development.
This Lord’s Day evening at 5:00 – until 6:00 PM will be our September Sunday evening prayer gathering. We will arrive in quietness – and remain for the 60 minutes in quiet prayer…..there will be no music – or video’s played — you and God and prayer. Bro Ross has a sheet of paper for you to pray through which will take us an hour to accomplish.
General Fund $3253
Missions – Homeless $2.00
Hey DISCOVERY – next Sunday is a little extra special in that nation wide – Christians will be inviting friends – family – co-workers to join with them in their Church Service.
Hope you already have an individual in mind to invite……After our Tuesday afternoon Prayer time – Annie and I went grocery shopping and ran into a friend. In the conversation I asked if he would be my guest on Sept 17 at our Back to Church Sunday – and he said he and his wife would be proud to be our guests……
The Passage below is what our D-Groups will be studying this week and the topic of our Celebration Service next weekend….
Psalm 6 O Lord, don’t rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage.
2 Have compassion on me, Lord, for I am weak. Heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony. 3 I am sick at heart. How long, O Lord, until you restore me? 4 Return, O Lord, and rescue me. Save me because of your unfailing love. 5 For the dead do not remember you.
Who can praise you from the grave?[b] 6 I am worn out from sobbing. All night I flood my bed with weeping, drenching it with my tears. 7 My vision is blurred by grief; my eyes are worn out because of all my enemies. 8 Go away, all you who do evil, for the Lord has heard my weeping.9 The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord will answer my prayer. 10 May all my enemies be disgraced and terrified. May they suddenly turn back in shame.
