blessed

When you spend some time on Facebook or Twitter – you will see legions of people who feel #blessed. I think this is a way of saying God is pouring His blessings on me as I try to be  HUMBLE. We Christians are NOT exempt from using this term.  Whether we pray for families — or other concerns which have arisen within the church – we attribute these underserved gifts as #Godsblessings…. When we use the word #blessed – what in the world are we talking about.  How should we understand God’s blessings?

 The Good Life

The CHURCH seems to associate “the good life” totally with God’s Blessings.  Translated: Great Marriage….Great Health…Great Friends…Great Family…Great Home…If we possess these benefits – are we extraordinarily blessed?

If a Christians enjoyed these benefits – would there be a temptation to be self-righteous & proud?

If a Christian enjoyed these benefits they trust themselves & their resources instead of trusting God.

 God’s Richest Blessings

My desire for God is greatly fueled by my need. And it is in the areas of loss where I feel my need most intensely. Unmet desires: 1) keep me on my knees…2)  Deepen my prayer life… 3) Make me search the Bible for God’s promises.

Physical blessings are temporary & can be removed in a heartbeat.   Job is a Biblical example. Discovery do not build your life around anything that can be taken away from you.

The Common Thread

The (ESV) has 112 references with the words bless, blessing or blessed, none of which connect blessing to material prosperity. Consider these passages:  Matt 5:3-11 “Blessed are the poor in spirit … Blessed are those who mourn … Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake … Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you.”

James 1:12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial.

Rev 14:13 “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. …

The GREEK word translated Blessed means (Fully Satisfied)   What is blessing, then? Scripture shows that blessing is anything God gives that makes us fully satisfied in him. Anything that draws us closer to Jesus. Anything that helps us relinquish the temporal and hold on more tightly to the eternal. And often it is the struggles and trials, the aching disappointments and the unfulfilled longings that best enable us to do that.

God’s greatest blessing always rests in God himself. When we have that, we are truly #blessed.

The title of an old hymn is this – JOY UNSPEAKABLE AND FULL OF GLORY.  That title certainly describes our hearts as we entered Discovery Center last Sunday evening around 5:45.  To see the room decorated for our 50th anniversary party – to see smiling faces – to hug the necks of friends and members – to know that Annie and I have been married 50 years if a gift from God – is an experience a couple will only experience once in a lifetime.

THANK YOU for making Sunday evening one of the most memorable evenings of our married life.

Where does one start when offering THANKS?  Invitations sent…..decorations made….cake baked – cut – and served ……punch poured and served…..music selected all of which was from 1966…WOW!!!…our wedding photo’s transferred into power-point…..our kiddo’s who live thousand miles away brought into the room via technology – giving us a verbal blessing – to say it in one sentence — it does not get better than this……Thanks Discovery for your love – and the multiple ways that love played out Sunday Evening……

The love continues – yesterday (Wednesday) – Annie’s twin brothers and their wives came to visit with us and take us out to dinner last night.  We had a great fellowship and stayed at the restaurant till 10:00 PM…..

In a couple weeks, Mindy Nowlin and a couple family members desire to be immersed into Christ.  Maybe there are others who faithfully attend Discovery who have considered being baptized – but have not yet verbalized it…..please see Max ASAP – and we will establish a teaching time as well as a time to be immersed….

At our CELEBRATION SERVICE this weekend – we will conclude our study the 1st chapter of Ephesians.  Paul founded the church & for a time served minister with the Ephesian church.  Without a doubt Paul knew several of the members by name.  He was also aware of their strong faith and how much they loved Christians in other churches.  Thus he thanked God for these Christians every time he thought of the Ephesians Church…..The challenge of this passage is this — what are we doing to get to know God better.

Did you know that v15-23 is one sentence in the Greek Language?

What are you personally doing to grow in your knowledge of God?

Did you know that the power that raised Christ from the dead also dwells in you?

This entire passage is a prayer…what role does PRAYER play in your life?

Hope everyone is planning on attending one of our 2 Celebration Services this weekend.  The early Church participated in the Lord’s Supper once a week as a minimum…..As a matter of fact – according to Acts 2 there were 4 parts of their weekly worship service…v42 All the believers devoted themselves (1)  to the apostles’ teaching, and to (2)  fellowship, and to (3)  sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to (4)  prayer.

sunday-prayer

This Sunday evening between 5:00 – 7:00 PM will be our June Drop in Prayer Service.     The Bible is clear that we can pray anytime – anywhere.   Yet there are times when God wants us to pray as a community.  Early in Acts – the believers were called together to pray – looking back we know they prayed for 10 days…..the Holy Spirit came upon them – and the church was birthed in a prayer meeting – 3,000 souls were baptized into Christ…..there seems to be something special when the church prays as a Community…..therefore everyone is invited to join in one accord this Sunday evening to pray for the Northeast — for Discovery – for the sick – for the sick in soul…..

Eph 2:1-10   Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world.[a] He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.  But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.  God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
