Romans 7:18 – New Year’s Promises
Rom 7:18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.
As you read these lines – I can can already see some of you turning UP your nose at Scriptural admonition that nothing good dwells in you…..and as we take exception of Paul’s words-it is important that we understand his point of reference……If we could do everything necessary to please Jesus and God in our flesh – we would not have the ability to carry it out – therefore we n need transformation – redemption – but knowing that is impossible to please God in the works of our flesh – we must determine that we will minister in the power and presence of the Spirit – not the flesh.
2016 has just begun – without a doubt any of you have made resolutions you want to see realized by the end of December. Thus many will hit the gym – others want to get in shape – i.e. walk more – jog – watch diet – some might determine they will be much more regular in church attendance — while others might consider quitting smoking or other habits which are costly – unhealthy – but have a sour witness to an unbeliever. But as we wait till mid-February – there will be a lot more open parking spots at the gym as well as the church. We can do the same thing as we follow Jesus. We can make big promises about the great things we plan to do for Him. We can try to impress Jesus with our performance. In the process we can forget two important facts….
1. God’s love for us is dependent on His grace and not our performance. Scripture makes this very clear in Romans 5:8- God demonstrates his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. God’s love for us was settled by Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.
2. This life is not about what we can do for God, but what He can do in and through us. God does not need us (see Acts 17:25), but He still desires to use imperfect instruments like us to accomplish His God-sized purposes.
As we enter 2016 – the question we do not need to ask is this – What Can I Do for God? But the greater question we all need to ask is this – What Does God Desire to Accomplish In and Through Me this Year?
Doctrinal preaching certainly bores the Hypocrites; but it is only
Doctrinal preaching that will save Christ’s Sheep. The
preacher’s job is to proclaim The faith, not to provide
entertainment for unbelievers – in Other words, to feed
the sheep rather than Amuse the goats

Shirley Duff worked diligently to prepare all our giving records so they would be available during the first part of the year. The majority were passed our last weekend. If you haven’t received yours – they are on the cadenza on the north wall of the foyer. Thanks Shirley for your impeccable work being the treasure of Discovery. On a side note – I hope everyone who opens the envelop and sees their financial contribution to Christ’s work in northeast Columbia will be challenged —– a) is this the best I can do…..b) what could we do without this year, so that others might hear about Jesus…c) is my gift a result of much prayer and listing to the Lord?……………..We are praising God that 14 of our people participated in the First Sunday Evening Prayer Gathering last Sunday. As those who participate will say – this is one of the great moment we look forward to each month……2 hours apart from any worldly care….2 hours where we are in the presence of God/Jesus/and the Holy Spirit……2 hours where we know we are in God’s will – our Father said- “My House will be called a house of prayer.” Please everyone — as you look forward to the next Month – Circle – Feb 7 – 5:00 PM as that will be our next Prayer Gathering. Personal prayer is valuable/important – but when God wants to do something beyond great – the church is called out to pray as one voice Acts 1:14 they all met together continually for prayer….there were 120 believers present…………….Subtle reminder – all 7 D-Groups will be meeting this week…………….So good to see the Yoder family back with us as they had spent the previous week in San Diego with their daughter Kirsten who is station there in the Navy……………..We are thankful to Jerry for getting our driveway plowed last weekend so we could get in/out. As you noticed – the concrete was cleared so we didn’t worry about slipping on ice……………..

Last Tuesday evening was the monthly evening dinner of the pastors….throughout the discussion – interesting topics were shared….one pastor asked how Discovery was doing – and I share we were a church of Cell-Groups – and that we currently have 7 groups meeting……this pastor was amazed at that report. He had been part of a church with the Cell Group structure.
The chairman of the Chaplin’s at the University Hospital was with us. I simply asked him – “Art –you have been in Columbia 18 years – I want you unbiased report on why it is so hard to minister NORTH of I-70 than it is SOUTH of I-70.” His answer confirmed some of my thinking but went beyond
The first thing Art said was this – “north of the interstate there is territorial domination.” I said – “do you mean Satanic oppression and control”. He said yes! WOW – I told him that we currently had monthly prayer meetings like IHOP in Kansas City –
The 2nd thing Art said – was over the past 15 years there has been a reduction of spirituality in the churches SOUTH of I-70. Since Monday night – these thoughts have cascaded through my mind and affirmed some of the issues I’ve had for the past 5 years.
Eph 6:12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

Rev 3:14-22 14 “Write this letter to the angel of the church in Laodicea. This is the message from the one who is the Amen—the faithful and true witness, the beginning[a] of God’s new creation: 15 “I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! 16 But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! 17 You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. 18 So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see. 19 I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference. 20 “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. 21 Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne. 22 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches.”
