One thing we will bring out at our Celebration services this weekend is how tradition adds to the Biblical account surrounding the birth of JESUS. One idea in particular is having the Wise Men at the Manger. Discussion is usually directed at those present – even though the Wise Men arrived much later – the discussion of their gifts is often omitted. What are we to make of the Gold – Frankincense – and myrrh? Most often gifts at baby showers are to be used either by the baby – or upon the baby but what would a baby do with gold, frankincense and myrrh?
Baby Jesus would have no immediate use for the gifts – but lets look beyond that though and acknowledge these 3 gifts are gifts fit for a KING. Let’s also acknowledge these 3 gifts were given as an act of worship (Matt 2:11)….Scripture does not acknowledge any other symbolic meaning to the gifts. The gifts did honor JESUS but there is a deeper theological significance as well.
The Gift of Gold
Gold is a valued commodity globally. Because of its scarcity and value gold was associated with royalty. Bringing gold, the Wise Men acknowledged JESUS as King. Most of us also believe they used the GOLD to finance their trip to Egypt and back.
The Gift of Frankincense
Frankincense is an aromatic gum resin that is still used today. When burned as incense it creates a strong beautiful aroma. It was also used in worship of a deity. By giving this gift the Wise Men understood the newborn King carried with it a claim of Deity.
The Gift of Myrrh
In regards to JESUS’ life myrrh was a key ingredient in the mixture of spices that were used to prepare bodies for burial (Jon 19:39-40). There is also a Temple connection – in Ex. 30 we see myrrh was a main ingredient in the anointing oil to prepare the priests. This parallels JESUS consecrated life and sacrificial death.
All 3 gifts reveal thought-provoking implications that related to JESUS’ life and ministry.

WILL STAND BEFORE JESUS ONE DAY.
· God will honor our Advent Series and bring all Glory and Honor to His one and only Son, Jesus Christ
· Everyone at Discover will discover new insights into the Advent – and as they deepen their faith – they will deepen their witness for Christ’s glory
· We will begin to see outsiders take advantage of the meal/snack that has been occurring at Discovery the past 2 month.
· God will place an opportunity on someone’s heart to be our point person for Sunday snacks…..it is not right or fair for the same ones to do it every week….My father always said – “many hands make light work”
· Chris Flennor is under a doctors care right now – trying to discover why he often shakes…..let’s pray for a quick diagnosis that is easily corrected
· Joy Weir continues to struggle with health issues
· Our city – with all the Gospel being preached weekly – God will plow the ground – making it fertile so that the seed of the Gospel can grow unhindered — give special prayer interest in Northeast Columbia
· Pick out one or two you haven’t seen at church lately – and pray daily for them that they will grace our assembly before Christmas.
The last month of the year is upon us…..there are many reasons why we give to the church….including: they trust the church’s leadership —- they are emotionally invested —-they are involved in the church —- they are inspired to give…..having given those 4 reasons- says nothing as to tithe – the lowest denomination bill in the wallet – or hoping it is a matter of faith coupled with prayer what God places upon their heart.
With 4 weekend’s left in our 2018 year – I want us to consider an event in this weekend’s celebration service — the Wise Men approached Jesus – 1) they knelt before Him, 2) they opened their treasure in worship and gave the 3 gifts to Jesus…..
Obviously we can chase the rabbit around the barn, like we have a need – you can deduct it from taxes – must keep the lights burning – though all that is true – I believe in you that you will give because of your love for Jesus and what He did for you on the cross, and that will not only motivate your year end gift, but will motivate your gifting in 2019….
As we look forward to worshipping together at Discovery this weekend, we will be looking at Matt 2 – including the journey of the Wise Men – the dialogue they have with King Herod and their Question to him.
You will discover 4 fulfilled prophecies within Matt 2 – and you will encounter 3 times when God’s angel disrupts Joseph’s sleep with a dream. You will also note whether Joseph’s obedience is immediate – delayed or ignored.
As the story develops we see why we call the lesson Waiting In A Violent Worldas Herod decrees to kill all male babies in Bethlehem 2 years of age and younger.
We will be amazed at the action of the Wise Men as they follow the star to the place where the infant Jesus was. We will also marvel that a wicked despot believed the Bible as to where Christ was born….we will continue to marvel that pagan Gentiles were directed by Holy God to find Jesus and worship Him.
Believing you will be in your place this weekend, I look forward to singing, communing, and worshiping with you.

Matt 1:46-56 “Oh, how my soul praises the Lord.47 How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!48 For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed.49 For the Mighty One is holy, and he has done great things for me.50 He shows mercy from generation to generation
to all who fear him.51 His mighty arm has done tremendous things! He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.52 He has brought down princes from their thronesand exalted the humble.53 He has filled the hungry with good thingsand sent the rich away with empty hands.54 He has helped his servant Israeland remembered to be merciful 55 For he made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children forever.”56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then went back to her own home.
