Acts 2:38-39   Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away[a]—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”

Baptism Service – Church Parking Lot

August 27, following Sunday Service

One individual has already requested to be immersed into Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins……If you have never been IMMERSED into Christ – please pray about this and get with Max before that date and plan for the greatest day in your life – when you join Christ in this beautiful act of baptism.

Also I’d like to challenge those who have been baptized in water – but you were told it was an outward sign of an inward grace – or it was to join the church – to do it for the biblical reason of Acts 2:38 —- only for the forgiveness of sin to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  If you would want to do it again, please let Max know in advance of the service.

Men will be cleaning our tank – filling it early the week of the 27 – being sure the water is warm…..there will also be a ladder to enter and exit the tank.  We have secured men to also help with individuals getting in and out of the tank.

Discovery – please pray that this will be a service which honors God – challenges people – and is a wonderful witness to all.   The tank will be on the sidewalk on the west side of the building by the water faucet.

Acts 3:1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour

Translating this text – it would read like this…

Now the members of Discovery were going to Discovery Center at the hour of prayer – 5;00 PM the 2nd Sunday of each month…..

For the next several months – the prayer gathering will be 1 hour – and total quietness during the hour….no music – instrumentation – video’s – quiet prayer time.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (2 Timothy 3:16)

Notice the phrase breathed out? Some translations render it given by inspiration. These phrases come from the Greek word theopneustos, which is the combination of theos, meaning God, and pneuma, coming from the root pneu, which describes a dynamic movement of air.

There are instances where it can be translated to breathe or emit a fragrance as well. So in this simple phrase, breathed out, there is a depth we don’t often perceive.

This word theopneustos then is really the picture of God breathing or emitting his own substance into something. Read how Rick Renner described this word:

“Let me give you this very simple example of the word theopneustos. If I hold a deflated balloon that is without form to my lips and breathe into it, the balloon will inflate. The blowing of my breath into that deflated little piece of rubber causes it to fill up so that its true form becomes visible.

When the balloon is fully inflated, I tie a knot at the base to trap the air within. Now the air that filled up the balloon and caused it to take form is the same substance that empowers it to sustain its form. It was my breath that created its form, and it is my breath that now sustains it. And if the molecules inside the balloon were analyzed, it would be found that a part of me is held inside in the form of the air I breathed into it.”

Today, the same essence, energy, and power that breathed out God’s Word still resides in it.

God himself breathed upon men who wrote as he moved in and upon them, and the Scriptures took form. Just as Jesus became flesh and dwelt among us, or took form, so God’s life took form in Scripture and will do the same in us.

How is God’s Word moving and sustaining you today?

·      Good response to this Sunday evening’s Hour of Prayer

·      School kids as they head back to the classroom….praying for their safety – for strong Christian friendships to be made – for them to see themselves as:  a student – but also as God’s representative to lead others to faith in JESUS

·      Anita and Jimmy – teachers at two respective school – that they will be used of God to communicate His love and grace.

·      Our sign and Blessing Box will be used of God to touch lives in our community

·      Everyone who calls Discovery home – will deepen their commitment to her – and make the body of Christ a priority – not a place to go if we don’t have any other choices.

·      God’s blessing on all of our married folk….the relationship of marriage mirrors Jesus’ relationship with  us —

·      Those who will be contemplating being baptized into Christ – Aug 27…..Pray the Spirit of God will hold Satan at bay because we know Satan is a poor loser.

James 4:1-10

What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure.

You adulterers![a] Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him.[b] And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say,

“God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble.”[c]

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.

God is using the BLESSING BOX to put food on some people table who live in our community — we have a good problem – we can’t keep it filled……Doug fills it every other day – and the food flies out of the Blessing Box….the problem – the box was empty on Wednesday –and there is NO MORE FOOD to restock it.

From the beginning we have said – we are relying on our members to bring food for the box – and not spend the church’s money — here is an area YOU can take ownership…

The food products we are looking for are non-perishable items – and at this time of year maybe back to school things…..

Our Celebration service this weekend will contrast Worldly Wisdom & the Wisdom that comes from above – there are 8 parts of the wisdom we seek – come and study with us – applying scripture and deepening faith to incorporate this wisdom in your lives…

James 3:13-17 If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. 15 For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. 16 For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind 17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.
