Self-deception is a universal condition of mankind.  The Bible declares “every man’s way is right in his own eyes.”  This deception comes from within the heart and involves choosing to believe a lie, often, for self-serving or self-flattering reasons.  Gal 6:3 anyone who thinks he is something when he is nothing deceives himself” said the Apostle Paul.  The teaching of Scripture is this – the Bible indicates by nature we are self-justifying creatures, prone to believe our own press and wishful thinking.  We are biased in our own self examination and ready to excuse ourselves at every turn, rationalizing our behavior and suppressing the truth about ourselves in order silence the voice of conscience within our hearts.  In short we deceive ourselves…

Does God’s Word even address the issue of self-deception?  We live in a world full of lies and deceit which comes from many sources.  They are lying spirits who lead us astray – 1 Tim 4:1 — there are “evildoers and impostors” looking for dupes 2 Tim 3:13….and perhaps most insidious – we have ourselves to deal with.  Self-deception is so prominent in our fallen world.

James 1:22-25 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

However, Christ’s offer of life to the full ——- demands an examined existence, fully exposed to ourselves, our God, and our world.  Join us over the next four weeks as we look at four aspects of self-deception and the Christian life that will help us to live more wholeheartedly.

April 16-17 –       Self-Deception and Rationalizing

·      Received a prayer request via Ross Duff – to pray for the Christians in the Ukraine — gentlemen name Zhenia sent the request.  There has been heavy shelling and bombing the past few days – please pray for the Christian’s safety.

·      Prayer of thanks for the blessings God gave us during the Easter Season – ranging from those who grew via Lent – the Passover Meal – the Good Friday service and our Resurrection Day Celebration Services.

·      2 Cor 10:4 We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.  Discovery  – may this teaching, be part of our daily prayers as we seek to be part of Kingdom work – growing the church – to the tearing down of false philosophies – and everything else that sets itself up against the Lord Jesus Christ.

It’s been a week since Spring Break ended – so I trust everyone is rested – back in town – and ready to gather with their community of believers this weekend.  We will be staring a new series – I TOLD ME SO….For the next 4 weekends – our theme will be Self-Deception….in the first lesson we will be looking at the Rich Young Ruler.  Even though the teaching is in several of the Gospels – our study will center on Luke’s treatise from chapter 18.  Please read his story beginning in v18 – 30……………..So glad we are seeing great partnership with the Blue Ridge Church.  Each Wednesday several of our teens attend their Youth Group – and some of our youth are playing in their praise team.  On Good Friday – there were more than 20 from Blue Ridge who joined us in worship……Parents of TEENS – you might want to take advantage of the youth program offered to us on Wednesday…..If you have questions – you could see Doug or Jackie……………If you have attended Discovery the past couple weeks – you note there are some changes…..we have theater lighting which we hope reduces some of the glare coming coming in the north windows……we also have a camera which allows the speaker to be projected on the screen.  What you see on the 2 Screens in the auditorium is also available to be viewed on all screens in the building……The sermon is also taped with full audio and video.  This means – (thank to Bro Doug) – it will be on Facebook sometime Sunday evening.  It will also be on our church website.  If you are unable to make a service- you can catch up easily — or if you would like to invite friends to catch a message – they can now have video as well as audio capability ……………..

 Sometimes God will

Put a Goliath

In your life,

For you to find

The DAVID

Within you

Thank you card

Numbers 22 Then the people of Israel traveled to the plains of Moab and camped east of the Jordan River, across from Jericho. Balak son of Zippor, the Moabite king, had seen everything the Israelites did to the Amorites. And when the people of Moab saw how many Israelites there were, they were terrified. The king of Moab said to the elders of Midian, “This mob will devour everything in sight, like an ox devours grass in the field!”  So Balak, king of Moab, sent messengers to call Balaam son of Beor, who was living in his native land of Pethor[a] near the Euphrates River.[b] His message said:   “Look, a vast horde of people has arrived from Egypt. They cover the face of the earth and are threatening me. Please come and curse these people for me because they are too powerful for me. Then perhaps I will be able to conquer them and drive them from the land. I know that blessings fall on any people you bless, and curses fall on people you curse.”

Balak’s messengers, who were elders of Moab and Midian, set out with money to pay Balaam to place a curse upon Israel.[c] They went to Balaam and delivered Balak’s message to him. “Stay here overnight,” Balaam said. “In the morning I will tell you whatever the Lord directs me to say.” So the officials from Moab stayed there with Balaam.  That night God came to Balaam and asked him, “Who are these men visiting you?”  10 Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent me this message: 11 ‘Look, a vast horde of people has arrived from Egypt, and they cover the face of the earth. Come and curse these people for me. Then perhaps I will be able to stand up to them and drive them from the land.’”  12 But God told Balaam, “Do not go with them. You are not to curse these people, for they have been blessed!” 13 The next morning Balaam got up and told Balak’s officials, “Go on home! The Lord will not let me go with you.” 14 So the Moabite officials returned to King Balak and reported, “Balaam refused to come with us.” 15 Then Balak tried again. This time he sent a larger number of even more distinguished officials than those he had sent the first time. 16 They went to Balaam and delivered this message to him:  “This is what Balak son of Zippor says: Please don’t let anything stop you from coming to help me. 17 I will pay you very well and do whatever you tell me. Just come and curse these people for me!” 18 But Balaam responded to Balak’s messengers, “Even if Balak were to give me his palace filled with silver and gold, I would be powerless to do anything against the will of the Lord my God. 19 But stay here one more night, and I will see if the Lord has anything else to say to me.” 20 That night God came to Balaam and told him, “Since these men have come for you, get up and go with them. But do only what I tell you to do.”
