The Concept for Discovery began in 2005. After three months of prayer, seeking God’s guidance and meeting in private homes, Discovery officially launched with the vision that it: “Exists to help people discover real life in Christ, and to develop contagious communities of believers following Him.” Discovery put that vision statement into action through developing a cell group structure.  Believers meet in small cell groups or “D-groups” at various times and locations throughout the week, with a meeting for corporate worship of all groups on the weekend.  Discovery’s cell groups began to meet throughout the week with corporate worship celebrations moving from Shepherd Park to Columbia Country Club and even Stoney Creek Inn. Property was purchased and developed, and in Fall, 2013, Discovery moved into its first permanent location at 3681 Mexico Gravel Road, Columbia, Missouri.

At Discovery, we believe worship has more to do with the motivation of our hearts than following a set of prescribed acts called worship. In fact we believe the attitude of a person’s heart can actually transform the most routine daily activities into acts of worship if that attitude is one set on glorifying and honoring God.  Discovery is a “come as you are” congregation. We design our weekend worship celebrations to be open and relaxed and casual attire is encouraged. We desire to create an atmosphere where God is glorified as each individual is drawn nearer to Christ and the entire congregation is drawn closer in community. We lean towards contemporary music but we appreciate and enjoy many forms and styles of music.  We also include standards, hymns and southern gospel music. The Lord’s Supper is served at every celebration and is open to all who wish to partake. The weekly message, presented by Pastor Max Jennings, is always scripturally sound and personally challenging. Weekend celebrations of worship run approximately one hour.

About God: We believe that God has eternally existed. He reveals Himself in three distinct equal person: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Though it is impossible to comprehend an Eternal God – God has made Himself available to everyone who desire to seek Him. God created the universe and all that is within. God’s passion is that each of us would desire to enter into a relationship with Him. God has said often, “I will be your God and You will be My people.” We believe that God loves us and wants what is best for us.

About Jesus: We believe that Jesus is the eternal, One and only Son of God. He has existed from eternity past yet in the fullness of time, He was conceived in the womb of a virgin (Mary) and was bon of a virgin mother. For thirty years, Jesus lived a sinless life. He knew from the beginning that He would come to earth as a man – the God-man – and at the end of His life be crucified on a cross. His shed blood is what forgives our sins. On the third day, Jesus rose triumphantly from the dead. He is the only way to Eternal life and forty days after His resurrection He ascended into Heaven where He is now serves as the Mediator between God and man. One day, Jesus will return in the clouds to complete His eternal plan.

About the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit has also existed from eternity past. He is the third member of the God-head. The Holy Spirit takes up residence in everyone who has been born again. The Holy Spirit also gives a spiritual gift to those who follow Christ. One of His roles is to convict us of sin, righteousness and judgment to come. As He ministers through each life, the church is continually being built up.

About Man: God created mankind glorify Him and enjoy Him forever. However, Adam and Eve were deceived by Satan and sinned choosing to live their life independent of God. It was this decision which allowed sin to be passed upon every man and all now suffer the consequences of sin. Man now has a decision to either continue to life independent of God and live apart from God for all eternity in hell. Man can also chose to walk in obedience to God and at death enjoy eternal bliss with God and the saved eternally.

About the Bible: Through 66 books we call the Bible, God has inspired 40 writers who lived on 3 separate continents over a period of time of 1500 years to write His inspired God. The Bible communicates God love for us – gives us principles by which to live our lives. We believe the Bible is entirely accurate – without contradictions and completely reliable. We look to the Bible for the revelation of the character of God and the final authority on all matters of faith and conduct.

About the Church: The church is comprised of those who have faith in the completed work of Christ upon the cross – who have repented of their sins, and have been immersed in the waters of baptism for the forgiveness of those sins. Jesus knows of only ONE church, thus His message was unity. Each one has a special spiritual gift, and when each utilize that gift the body maintains that unity, it grows, and it becomes attractive to outsiders. For this reason it is important for Christ followers to regularly gather together for the purpose of celebration. During celebration, Christ followers are equipped, built up, and encouraged through teaching, fellowship, prayer, and communion. Celebration in this way enables believers to serve one another and the unchurched people in their sphere of influence.
